Changing My Career: Where It Began (Part 1)

Published on January 18, 2019 in

It started in 2003.

Well, actually it started long before that but we’ll get to that later.

It was the summer after college graduation.

I was living in Lincoln Park in Chicago with two roommates and none of us had jobs yet. We spent some of our time looking for jobs, and a lot of time at the beach and bars. My parents were generously footing the bill while I awaited the “perfect” opportunity.

When August arrived my parents told me they were cutting me off financially the following month. I had to find a job, so I got down to business. I was determined to find something.

As the weeks passed and my timeline narrowed, I started to lose faith. Jobs in media and advertising were slim that year, and that’s the work I believed I should do.

One day I resigned to finding a retail job, or something similar. That same day I received a job offer from a media company. It was also the same day as my parents’ deadline.

The Universe is funny like that sometimes.

A week or so later I started my new job and on my very first day recall thinking, “uhhh, is this it?” – ’it’ being life as an adult and all that I’d worked for through college.

I didn’t receive an answer.

Maybe it’s because I was an Atheist?
